Cardinals Down Shoremen, 8-6, And End WC’s 12-Game Winning Streak

Connole 3-For-5 With Run Scored

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Catholic scored two times in the top of the ninth to snap a 6-6 tie en route to an 8-6 win over host Washington College on Wednesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference baseball action.  The Cardinals (11-6) snapped the Shoremen's (13-2) 12-game winning streak, which was the longest single-season winning streak for Washington in 75 years and was also the program's longest winning streak in a single season.

With the scored tied 6-6 and two outs in the top of the ninth, Mark Kalokitis singled home Tim Mierzwa from second base to put the Cardinals up 7-6.  Catholic then executed a double steal with Matt Grieb swiping home to put the guests up 8-6.  On the play Kalokitis took second.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Shoremen had the tying run at the plate, but Thomas Travaglia got sophomore Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) to groundout to Mike Gannon at shortstop to end the game and the streak.

Catholic scored five times in the top of the first to take a 5-0 lead.  Tommy Little scored on an error to put the visitors up 1-0.  Mierzwka scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Grieb to increase the lead to 2-0.  Colin McCarthy stretched the lead to 4-0 with a two-run double and McCarthy scored on a Dan Sullivan two-bagger to cap the scoring and gave the guests a five-run lead.

The Shoremen got one run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-1 on a single by junior CY Daniel Wu (Kowloon, Hong Kong/International Secondary School) that plated junior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).  In the last of the sixth, senior Ryan Normoyle (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) drove in junior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) on a double and Normoyle touched the dish on a RBI groundout by senior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Catholic added a run in the top of the seventh on Marc Hanna single to center that plated Gannon to make it 6-3, but Washington struck right back with a run in the bottom half of the frame when senior Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) singled home freshman Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) to cut it to 6-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, WC scored twice to level the game at 6-6.  Normoyle scored from first on a single by Cotterell as he was running on the play and Cotterell scored on an error by the Cardinals to tie the game.  It would stay 6-6 until there were two away in the ninth.

For Catholic, McCarthy drove in two runs and Mierzwa scored twice as the team netted nine hits by nine different players.  On the mound, Travaglia pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to get the win and goes to 2-0.

For WC, Connole went 3-for-5 with a run scored and led all players with his three hits.  Cotterell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Normoyle also scored twice.  The hosts had 11 hits in the loss.  Pitching wise, senior Hunter Draheim (Hollywood, MD/Leonardtown) took the loss and drops to 0-1.

WC returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Maine-Presque Isle.  First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 12:00 p.m.
