Win Over Fords is First for Shoremen Since 2008
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's lacrosse team ran its win streak to five games and scored its first victory over visiting Haverford College since 2008, defeating the Fords, 12-3, in a Centennial Conference game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen, who improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Centennial Conference play with the victory, raced out to an 8-1 halftime lead in the game.
Washington set the tone early, scoring just 15 seconds into the game on a goal by senior attackman Dominic Serio (FInksburg, MD/Mount St. Joseph) off a feed from junior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall). The Shoremen went on to score two more goals in the quarter to take a 3-0 lead after one period.
Washington freshman midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, NY/White Plains) won the opening face-off of the second quarter, raced down the field, and scored to push the lead to 4-0 with 14:53 to play before the intermission. After the Fords (1-6, 0-2) got on the board with an extra-man goal by Henry Lanier off a feed from Jake Maldonado with 13:10 on the clock, Trapp again won a face-off, raced down the field, and fed junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) for a goal just six seconds later to extend the lead back to 5-1. The Shoremen tacked on three more goals before halftime to build their 8-1 lead.
When Serio found sophomore attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) for a goal 2:45 into the third quarter, Campbell became the ninth different Shoreman to score in the contest as the lead extended to 9-1. The Fords never got closer than within seven goals in the remainder of the contest.
Trapp went 13-for-18 on face-offs in the game and scooped up five ground balls. Senior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) played the first 55:49 of the game for Washington and made 11 saves while allowing just three goals. Stewart also tallied his first career assist in the game, finding sophomore midfielder Kodie Englehart (Coronado, CA/Coronado) with an outlet pass during the second quarter. Englehard raced down the field unmarked and fired in the goal with 3:58 remaining in the period.
Sophomore midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) led the Shoremen offensively with two goals and two assists, while freshman attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and Coyle each had two goals and one assist. Serio and Stewart added a goal and an assist each.
Phillip Valliant, Geoff Geppert, and Lanier each scored one goal for the Fords in the loss.
Washington held a 34-29 advantage in shots in the game, which saw 11 penalties assessed to each team.
The Shoremen's last win over the Fords was an 11-6 victory in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on May 2, 2008. The Shoremen had won the first 19 all-time meetings against the Fords, but had lost each of the last three. Washington matched its win total from all of last season with tonight's victory.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin & Marshall.
