Looney Nets Four Goals, Nowicki Totals Six Total Points in Win
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Fifth-ranked host Washington College outscored visiting Eastern University, 9-3, in the second half en route to a 13-6 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament first round win tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Eastern got on the board first as Andrew Travers scored off an assist from Andy Jameson 1:51 into the game. Washington evened things up with 9:38 left in the first quarter as junior attackman Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) scored.
The Shoremen took the lead just 12 seconds into the second quarter as sophomore attackman Casey Kermes (State College, Pa./Northfield Mount Herman [Mass.] scored an extra-man goal off an assist from senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin). Eastern quickly evened the score 45 seconds later on a Jameson goal off an assist from Eric Waibel. Washington scored the next two goals as sophomore midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) scored with 6:18 on the clock and senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) followed with a goal of his own with 4:58 left. Eastern pulled back to within a goal when Grant Ferguson found the back of the net off a Dave Darling assist with 3:41 remaining in the second.
The Eagles knotted the score at 4-4 just nine seconds into the third quarter as Kyle Gillam scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Ferguson. The Shoremen regained the lead again off a Nowicki goal with 12:33 to go in the third. Looney then extended the lead to two goals with a score off an assist from Nowicki with 11:17 on the clock. Eastern quickly answered 24 seconds later as Waibel scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Jameson to trim the lead back to one. The Shoremen countered with an extra-man goal by Cusick off an assist from Nowicki with 9:15 to go to extend the lead to 7-5. Washington took its first three-goal lead of the contest when junior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) scored off a Nowicki assist with 6:11 remaining in the third. Looney added another goal to the lead with 34 seconds to go in the third to give the Shoremen a 9-5 advantage after three quarters.
Eastern opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a goal by Ferguson off a Tim Lamb assist with 11:34 to play. Looney made it 10-6, however, with his fourth goal of the game, this one off an assist from senior attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) with 8:42 remaining. Nowicki followed with a goal with 7:21 left to give the Shoremen a five-goal cushion. Campbell then found the back of the net himself with 6:01 remaining as Washington doubled up the Eagles. Kermes closed out the scoring with 48 seconds left with a goal off an assist from freshman attackman Owen Evans (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson).
Looney led all players with four goals in the win for the Shoremen. Nowicki added two goals and handed out a game-high four assists for six total points. Kermes and Cusick scored two goals a piece. Junior midfielder Ray Circo (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) went 12-for-16 on face-offs for the Shoremen, scooping up seven ground balls. Senior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) made 15 saves for Washington before exiting the game with 2:33 left.
Ferguson had two goals and one assist, while Jameson had a goal and two assists for the Eagles. Pat Groschan made 13 saves for Eastern.
Washington held a 61-31 advantage in shots in the game and a 35-29 edge in ground balls.
The Shoremen will host 10th-ranked Lynchburg in an NCAA Division III Tournament second-round game Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Hornets were 25-4 winners over Sewanee in a first-round game tonight.
