#15 Bears Pull Away from Shoremen, 14-6

Looney Scores Three Goals in Loss for Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- 15th-ranked Ursinus College scored seven of the game's final eight goals en route to a 14-6 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse win over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Bears improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 5-6 and 4-1 with the loss.

The Shoremen broke through first when freshman attackman Tanner Barbieri (Wayne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) scooped up a loose ball and quickly found freshman attackman Tyler Powers (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) in front of the crease for a goal with 4:44 left in the first quarter. Ursinus evened the score when Mark Stratton scored off a Jake Weber assist just 1:42 later.  Junior midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) put the Shoremen back in front with 1:58 left in the first, but Logan Panaccione countered for Ursinus off a Weber assist just 48 seconds later to level the score at two goals a piece. 

Ian Moore gave the Bears their first lead of the game with an unassisted goal 55 seconds in the second quarter. Gerard Brown upped the Ursinus advantage to 4-2 with a goal exactly a minute later. Steve Smyrl scored in transition off a pass from Ian Desenberg with 10:07 remaining in the second as the lead grew to three goals. Senior attackman Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) ended the Ursinus run with a goal with 7:48 on the clock. Steve Mussoline found the back of the net for the Bears' sixth goal off an assist from Stratton with 6:25 left. Senior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) countered for the Shoremen with a goal off an assist from Barbieri just 14 seconds later, trimming the lead to 6-4. 

Panaccione opened the third quarter scoring with 13:41 on the clock, scoring on the extra man off an assist from Mussoline. Looney then scored an extra-man goal for the Shoremen off a Powers assist at 12:57 before the Bears got a goal from Stratton off a Mussoline assist at 7:51 to set the score at 8-5. A behind-the-back goal by Weber off a Mussoline assist on an extra-man to give Ursinus its first four-goal lead at 9-5 with 4:34 to play in the third. The Ursinus run continued when Weber scored with just 10 seconds to go in the third. 

Ursinus opened the fourth quarter as it closed out the third as Mike Neal scored off an Ian Moore feed with 12:30 remaining in the game to open up an 11-5 advantage. Looney finally ended the four-goal Ursinus run with a goal off a Barbieri assist with 10:13 left. Mussoline scored another extra-man goal for the Bears off an assist from Neal with 6:21 to go to make it 12-6.  Conor Fitzgerald tacked on the Bears' 13th goal on an extra man off an assist from Weber with 3:06 to go and Neal put home the 14th with 2:06 left to provide the final margin. 

Weber and Mussoline each finished with two goals and three assists for the Bears. Neal and Stratton had two goals and one assist each, while Panaccione had two goals. Looney led the Shoremen with three goals, while Powers had one goal and one assist.

Brian Neff made 12 saves in goal for the Bears, while sophomore goalie Jackson Szurley (Lincoln, R.I./Moses Brown) made 12 for the Shoremen. The Bears held a 45-35 advantage in shots and won 14 of the game's 24 face-offs.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson.
