CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The 2018 Washington College men's soccer team welcomes back 14 of the 18 student-athletes who played in 10 or more games last season as the Shoremen seek their second Centennial Conference Tournament appearance in three years this fall.
Nine seniors dot the Shoremen's roster. Forward Brian Graham (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) played in all 17 games a year ago, starting 16, and tallied two goals and one assist, while midfielder Aaron Barclay (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 14 starts and scored one goal while playing in all 17. Midfielder Christian Keller (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School) tied for the team's lead in goals with three and made 13 starts in 17 games. Goalkeeper Josh Samuels (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) made eight starts last fall before his season was cut short due to injury; he was named to the All-Centennial Conference second team two years ago. Midfielder Kevin Sawyer (Washington, D.C./St. John's College H.S.) made eight starts and played in all 17 games, while midfielder Matt Rannie (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) made two while playing in 15 and midfielder David McSwain (Durham, N.C./Riverside) made nine in 12 games. Defenders Kyle Kirwan (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and Pat O'Neal (Birmingham, Ala./Altamont School) round out the senior class. Kirwan was named the team's Most Improved Player a year ago, making his first career start while playing in a career-best 11 games.
This year's junior class is also high on collegiate game experience, especially on defense. Defender Sean Garin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) was one of only two Shoremen to start all 17 games a year ago and added an assist for good measure. Defender Evan Savoth (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made 16 starts in 17 games and tied for the team lead with three goals. Defender Alexander Nagy (Rockville, Md./Rockville), meanwhile, made 11 starts in 14 games. Forward Liam Mansfield (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made two starts in 10 games, while midfielder Dylan Gray (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) logged time in nine games.
The 10-member sophomore class is the Shoremen's largest this season. Defender Del Jenkins (Barrington, R.I./Milton Academy [Mass.]) and midfielder James Strine (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum School) each made four starts in 16 games played as freshmen. Jenkins scored two goals and assisted on another, while Strine scored one goal and assisted on two others. Forward Greg Adams (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) appeared in 13 games, scored two goals, and notched two assists. Goalkeeper Gavin Campbell (Wilmington, Del/Salesianum School) filled in as the starter after Samuels went down, making six starts in eight overall games played, while defender Terran Ondiek (Silver Spring, Md./James H. Blake) made one start in 11 games played. Defender Aidan Kelly (Bear, Del./Salesianum School) and forward Remy Kriz (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) each played in eight games. Defender Aidan Chadam (Danville, Calif./Athenian School), defender Frank Koons (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy), and midfielder Raymond Lewis (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) complete the sophomore class.
Midfielder Zack Urbanski (Nottingham, Md./Calvert Hall) was sidelined with injury for the entirety of his first season at Washington College and will be using his freshman season of eligibility this fall. Four other freshmen join the Shoremen's roster this fall - midfielders Eric Gwadz (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) and Trevor Zinkand (Middle River, Md./Calvert Hall) and defenders Joe Mutscheller (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and Kirk Robinson (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion).
Head coach Roy Dunshee embarks on his seventh season leading the Shoremen, making him the fourth-longest head coach in the program's history. He welcomes back a veteran assistant coaching staff that will looks to build on the high points of last season's 6-10-1 campaign. That included a 3-2 double-overtime win over Eastern Shore rival Salisbury, the program's first over the Sea Gulls since 1989, and three shutout victories in Centennial Conference play.
