WC Rallies Past Olivet, Blows Out Wheelock
FORT MYERS, FL -- The Washington College softball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of wins today in Fort Myers, FL. The Shorewomen opened the day with a dramatic extra-inning win over Olivet, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-6 victory. They then pounded Wheelock, 21-2, in five innings in their second game of the day. Washington's 21 runs against Wheelock tied for the second most in a single game in school history.
The Shorewomen jumped on top of Olivet with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) drove in sophomore center fielder Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) with a single. Sophomore left fielder Jordan Tryhubenko (Cockeysville, MD/Dulaney) then scored on an error. Two batters later, Snover scored on a bunt single by freshman first baseman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur). Sophomore shortstop Margaret Rohde (Highland Lakes, NJ/Academy of Home Education) scored on a wild pitch for the Shorewomen's fourth run of the frame.
Olivet got on the board in the top of the fourth as Breanna Bunker led off with a double and scored on a ground-out by Alyssa Snyder. The Comets got two more runs in the top of the fifth to narrow the marin to 4-3. Christine Duab doubled in Cortney Wernette and later scored on an error. Olivet evened the score in the top of the sixth as Jenny Robbins drove in Tia Van Winkle with a double.
In the top of the eighth, Olivet got a go-ahead run when Morgan Iloncaie scored from third base on a failed pick-off attempt at first base. Katie Harper then drove in Snyder with a bases-loaded single for the Comets' sixth run. Olivet still had the bases loaded with no outs, but the Shorewomen got a pair of force outs at home and a fly out to end the inning and limit the damage.
The Shorewomen rallied in the bottom of the eighth as Snover scored on a throwing error and Nottingham doubled in freshman second baseman Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) to tie the score at 6-6 with one out. Freshman right fielder Kaitlin Rowan (Damascuc, MD/Damascus) then won the game for the Shorewomen with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Nottingham.
Nottingham was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, two RBI, and a run scored for the Shorewomen, while Snover was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) picked up her first collegiate win in relief, allowing three runs - just one of them earned - on three hits and one walk in three and one-third innings. Ten Comets had at least one hit in the game and Daub was the only one with two, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI.
The Shorewomen came out swinging against Wheelock, scoring 11 times in the bottom of the first inning. Nottingham drove in three runs and scored one in the inning, while Carbutt and Rohde each had two RBI and two runs in the frame. Washington plated seven more runs in the second inning, including four on a grand slam by Snover, the first of her career. The Shorewomen added their 19th run in the bottom of third when freshman Jory Yerkie (Worton, MD/Kent County) drove in Glascock with a pinch-hit single. Washington scored its final two runs in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Rohde and a single by Glascock. Wheelock scored both of its runs in the third.
Nottingham finished the Wheelock game 4-for-5 with a double, five RBI, and a run scored, while Snover was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, the grand slam, five RBI, and three runs. Carbutt went 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBI, and two runs scored. Rohde was 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Glascock finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and three runs scored. Junior right fielder Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
Freshman pitcher Becca Hoffman (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) picked up her first collegiate win against Wheelock, allowing two runs - neither of them earned - on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
The Shorewomen's previous 21-run effort was A 21-0 win against Haverford on April 17th, 1996. The school record for runs in a game is 29 set in a 29-19 win against Old Westbury on March 20th, 1994.
The Shorewomen will play Carroll at 9:00 a.m. and Rockford at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow in Fort Myers.
