Bell Rings Up Impressive Debut as Shorewomen Open with Split

Shorewomen Fall to Bridgewater in Five, Sweep Pitt-Bradford to Open Season

GETTYSBURG, PA -- Washington College freshman outside hitter Lauren Bell (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) made an impressive collegiate debut as the Shorewomen opened their 2011 season by splitting a pair of matches today at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. The Shorewomen (1-1) dropped a tough five-set match to open the season as Bridgewater pulled out a 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-6, win. Washington bounced back with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-15, sweep of 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament participant Pitt-Bradford in the nightcap. Bell pounded down a total of 32 kills in the two matches.

In the match against Bridgewater, the Shorewomen finished the fourth set on a 5-1 run, winning on an ace by sophomore setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MDHuntingtown), to force the decisive fifth set. The Eagles ended the fifth set on an 11-1 run, however, to take the match. Katie Baker pounded down 20 kills against just four errors and notched four solo blocks and four assisted blocks to lead the Eagles.  Mara Hogan, Katie Long, and Cadie Castle each had nine kills for Bridgewater; Hogan added 13 digs. Kylie Graham tallied 41 assists, while Casey O'Leary had 14 digs.

For the Shorewomen Bell racked up a match-best 22 kills to go along with 14 digs. Her 22 kills were the most by a Shorewoman in a single match since Katherine O'Brien's 28 against Delaware Valley on October 6, 2007. Junior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) added 11 kills and 16 digs, while White had six kills, 41 assists, and nine digs and junior defensive specialist Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) contributed 10 digs.

The Shorewomen hit .250 as a team in the three-set sweep of Pitt-Bradford, last year's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Champions. Their stiffest test in that match came early in the second set, falling behind, 7-2, before scoring 13 of the next 14 points to build a 15-8 lead. Washington closed out the third set with a 12-4 run.

Lee posted another double-double in the Pitt-Bradford match, chalking up a match-high 12 kills against only two errors in 21 attempts and scooping out 11 digs. Bell added 10 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Emily Hoyle (Santa Rita, Guam/Guam) added eight. White had 29 assists, while Rowan tallied 10 digs.

Meghan Lundquist led Pitt-Bradford with 10 kills, while Jillian Reitz had a match-best 17 digs.

The Shorewomen conclude play at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic tomorrow with a 10:00 a.m. match against Mount Saint Vincent and a 2:00 p.m. match against Penn State-Mont Alto.
