Gophers Spoil Shoremen's Season Opener, 8-6

Hughes Scores Two Goals in Collegiate Debut for Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Goucher College scored six unanswered goals and built an 8-3 lead through three quarters and held on for an 8-6 win over host Washington College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Gophers improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Shoremen dropped their season opener.

The Shoremen got on the board just 18 seconds into the game as junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) scored an unassisted goal. Goucher countered with 7:50 left in the first quarter on a goal by Pierce Ingram. The score remained 1-1 through the rest of the opening period.

Washington started quickly in the second quarter as junior attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored 17 seconds in off an assist from sophomore attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall). The Gophers then started their six-goal run, beginning with a goal by Rory Averett with 12:08 to play in the second. The Gophers scored four times in the final 3:38 of the second quarter, taking a 6-2 halftime lead on a goal by Ingram off an assist by Kyle Boncaro with six-tenths of a second left. Goucher pushed the lead to 7-2 when Boncaro scored off an assist from Matt Lynch with 13:55 to go in the third. Washington finally ended the run with a goal by sophomore midfielder Ryan Polak (Cincinnati, OH/Ridgewood [NJ]) with 10:43 remaining in the period. Goucher responded with an extra-man goal by Lynch off an assist from Zachary Fratella with 9:45 left in the third to extend the lead to 8-3.

The Shoremen scored three times in the fourth quarter as they tried to mount a comeback, but could get no closer than two goals as the Gophers held on for the victory.

Lynch scored three goals and assisted on another in the win for Goucher, while Ingram also finished with three goals. Boncaro had a goal and two assists.  Goucher goalie Connor Mishaw made 14 saves in the win, while Bryce Carson led the defensive effort with four ground balls and two draw controls. 

Freshman attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored the Shoremen's final two goals of the game in his collegiate debut. Cord finished with a goal and two assists for Washington, while Cusick had one goal and one assist. Senior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made 10 saves for the Shoremen, while sophomore long-stick midfielder Casey McKnight (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) tallied a game-best four caused turnovers.

The Shoremen out-shot the Gophers, 40-38, for the game, but Goucher held a 27-17 advantage in shots over the middle two quarters.  Washington also won 11 of the game's 14 face-offs on the strength of a 10-for-13 performance by freshman midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, NY/White Plains). Clearing plagued the Shoremen in the loss; they were 9-for-16 on clearing attempts before converting their final three to finish at 12-for-19 for the game. Goucher was just 2-for-6 on clears in the fourth quarter, but the Gophers were 14-for-16 over the first three periods. 

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 1:00 p.m. game at Washington and Lee.
