Shoremen Finish Ahead of 22 Boats in Open Club Eight
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- An eighth-place overall finish among 30 boats in the open club eights highlighted the performance of the Washington College men's rowing team today at the Head of the Schuylkill regatta in Philadelphia. Washington completed the race in 14:11.7733, the fifth-best time of the 21 collegiate boats in the race.
Senior Springer Harris (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the open club eight. Senior Brian Gamble (Gibson Island, MD/Holderness School, NH) sat stroke, junior Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, junior Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok) sat in the six seat, sophomore Sean Harrison (Richmond, VA/Hazleton Area, PA) was in the five seat, senior Andrew Newell (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sat in the four seat, senior Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the three seat, junior Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) was in the two seat, and freshman Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School, MA) was the bow. University Barge Club won the open club eight in 13:233.0933.
Junior Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the open four, which finished 22nd of 32 boats in 17:04.2233. Senior Dan Pierce (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) sat stroke, senior Tommy Price (Pasadena, MD/Severn School) was in the three seat, freshman Sam Hartman (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sat in the two seat, and senior Quentin Swain (Pasadena, MA/Mount St. Joseph) was the bow. Pennsylvania Athletic Club won the open four in 14:42.0267.
Freshman Reese Laricks (Newark, DE/Delaware Military Academy) was the coxswain for the Shoremen in the college frosh/novice four as WC finished 10th of 16 boats in the event in 19:19.9730. Freshman Tom Harris (Downingtown, PA/Loomis Chaffee, CT) sat stroke, freshman Joe Hemphill (Lexington, VA/Blue Ridge School) was in the three seat, sophomore Ian Holstrom (New Hope, PA/Solebury School) sat in the two seat, and freshman Ryan Bankert (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was the bow. Washington posted the eighth-fastest time in the race, but was given a 30-second penalty for missing a buoy. Temple won the race in 16:33.563.
Laricks also served as coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the college frosh/novice eight, which placed 23rd of 28 boats in 16:57.3367. Freshman Lawrence Baker (Shady Side, MD/Southern) sat stroke, freshman Mitch Witherow (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) was in the seven seat, freshman Kyle Benk (Bloomsburry, NJ/Phillipsburg) sat in the six seat, freshman Parker McIntosh (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the five seat, freshman Kyle Carlson (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) was in the four seat, freshman Christoper Paul (Preston, MD/North Caroline) sat in the three seat, freshman Jeff Nutting (Catonsville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was in the two seat, and freshman Josh Smith (Annapolis, MD/Southern) was the bow. Princeton won the college frosh/novice eight in 13:30.3800.
