Novice Four Wins Second Straight Silver Medal

Shoremen Also Turn in Impressive Finishes in Two Other Events at Head of the Occoquan

LORTON, VA -- For the second straight regatta, the Washington College men's rowing team won a silver medal in the men's collegiate novice four, this time placing second of 16 boats at today's Head of the Occoquan regatta in Lorton, VA.  The Shoremen competed in a total of four events at the regatta, also turning in impressive finished in the men's collegiate four and men's collegiate eight.

The Shoremen's novice four finished in a time of 19:15.33.  Ohio State was first in 18:35.68, while Virginia Teach was third in 19:32.54.  Ten of the 16 boats in the race were from NCAA Division I schools.

Freshman Chris Moylan (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the men's collegiate novice four. Freshman Blake Weishaar (Denton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) sat stroke, freshman Robert Billings (Easton, MD/Easton) was in the three seat, sophomore Aric Charowsky (Townsend, DE/St. Thomas More Prep) sat in the two seat, and freshman Max Villa (Great Meadows, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was the bow. 

In the men's collegiate four, the Shoremen were sixth of 30 boats in 18:08.58. Notre Dame won the race in 16:30.38, and another Notre Dame boat took second in 17:28.17. George Mason was third in 17:32.96. The top five boats and 22 of the 30 total boats in the race were all from NCAA Division I schools. 

Sophomore Jeff Nutting (Catonsville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the men's collegiate four. Sophomore Lawrence Baker (Shady Side, MD/Southern) sat stroke, senior Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) was in the three seat, junior Miqdad Annab (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was in the two seat, and freshman Jack McCarthy (Long Beach Island, NJ/The Hun School) was the bow.

In the men's collegiate eight, the Shoremen's "A" boat was seventh in 16:28.05, while the "B" boat was 13th in 17:26.78. The top five finishing boats were all from NCAA Division I schools with Notre Dame leading the way in 15:48.27. Only six of the boats in the race were not from Division I schools.

Senior Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "A" boat in the men's collegiate eight. Sophomore Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School [MA]) sat stroke, senior Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, senior Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok [Thailand]) sat in the six seat, junior Sean Harrison (Richmond, VA/Hazelton Area [PA]) was in the five seat, sophomore Parker McIntosh (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the four seat, graduate student Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the three seat, freshman Nick Stewart (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Mitch Witherow (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) was the bow.

Senior Eric Swenson (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "B" boat in the men's collegiate eight. Freshman Colin Mitchell (Burlingame, CA/Burlingame) sat stroke, sophomore Kyle Benk (Bloomsburry, NJ/Phillipsburg) was in the seven seat, sophomore Joe Hemphill (Lexington, VA/Blue Ridge School) sat in the six seat, senior David Smaus (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) was in the five seat,  junior Zack Holocker (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County) sat in the four seat, sophomore Tom Newton (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Huntingtown) was in the three seat, freshman Dominic DiMarino (Wilmington, DE/Concord) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Mike Haas (Crofton, MD/Arundel) was the bow.

The Shoremen finished 19th of 20 in the men's collegiate novice eight in 19:55.41. Notre Dame won the race in 16:56.84, while Virginia Teach was second in 17:19.62, and Ohio State was third in 17:48.84. Of the 20 boats in the race, all but four were from NCAA Division I schools.

Freshman Rebecca Wozniak (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the the men's collegiate novice eight. Freshman Drew Pizzala (Towson, MD/Boys' Latin) sat stroke, freshman Patrick Cahill (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) was in the seven seat, freshman Chris Schwartz (Silver Spring, MD/Cedar Brook Academy) sat in the six seat, freshman Chris Carrara (Leesburg, NJ/Millville) was in the five seat, freshman Eli Banghart (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) sat in the four seat, freshman Anthony Cairo (Port Murray, NJ/Warren Hills) was in the three seat, freshman Anthony Pipolo (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) was in the two seat, and freshman Michael Scaldini (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River) was the bow.

Today's regatta marked the final competition of the fall for the Shoremen.
