Shoremen Win Novice Four
LEWISBERRY, PA -- The Washington College men's rowing team finished second overall at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships today at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, PA. The Shoremen totaled 21 points in the two scoring events - the varsity four and varsity eight. Franklin & Marshall won the championship with 22 points. Rutgers-Camden was third with 17 points, while Mary Washington was fourth with two points. Richard Stockton did not compete in either scoring event. St. Mary's, Marietta, and Scranton competed as non-scoring, non-conference entries.
The Shoremen's novice four finished first out of six boats in 7:07.0. Marietta was second in 7:12.2, Rutgers-Camden was third in 7:34.2, Franklin & Marshall was fourth in 7:53.4, Richard Stockton was fifth in 7:56.2, and Scranton was sixth in 8:53.2.
Washington's varsity eight took second of five boats in 6:21.2. Marietta won the race in 6:10.1, Franklin & Marshall was third in 6:37.2, St. Mary's was fourth in 6:39.2, and Rutgers-Camden placed fifth in 6:42.1.
The Shoremen's "A" boat in the varsity four was second in its four-boat heat in 7:01.9 to advance to the final. Marietta won the heat in 6:41.8, Mary Washington was third in 7:09.9, and Scranton was fourth in 7:47.3. The Shoremen's "B" boat also qualified for the final based on its fourth-place heat time of 7:08.5. Franklin & Marshall won that heat in 6:41.0, Rutgers-Camden was second in 6:49.6, St. Mary's was third in 6:54.7, and Susquehanna was fifth in 7:11.6. In the final of the varsity four, Franklin & Marshall finished first in 6:48.8, Marietta second in 6:51.7, Rutgers-Camden third in 7:01.9, St. Mary's fourth in 7:06.2, and the Shoremen's "B" boat fifth in 7:28.9. The Shoremen's "A" boat, unfortunately, did not finish the race due to an equipment failure early in the race.
Sophomores Anthony Cairo (Port Murray, NJ/Warren Hills) and Dominic DiMarino (Wilmington, DE/Concord) rowed in the varsity pair for the Shoremen, finishing fourth in a four-boat race in 7:30.0. Marietta "A" won the race in 7:07.7, Rutgers-Camden was second in 7:14.7, and Marietta "B" was third in 7:17.6.
Freshman Christie Phebus (Trappe, MD/Easton) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's novice four. Freshman Ben Sproule (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) sat stroke, freshman Ian Briggs (Huntsville, AL/The Gow School [NY]) was in the three seat, freshman Andy Sauthoff (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) was in the two seat, and freshman Brian Zohorsky (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) was the bow.
Junior Jeff Nutting (Catonsville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "A" boat in the varsity four. Junior Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School [MA]) sat stroke, Sean Harrison (Richmond, VA/Hazelton Area [PA]) was in the three seat, senior Miqdad Annab (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was in the two seat, and sophomore Conor Howlett (Tampa, FL/H.B. Plant) was the bow.
Sophomore Rebecca Wozniak (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "B" boat in the varsity four. Sophomore Rob Billings (Easton, MD/Easton) sat stroke, sophomore Jack McCarthy (Long Beach Island, NJ/The Hun School) was in the three seat, sophomore Chris Carrara (Leesburg, NJ/Millville) was in the two seat, and sophomore Max Villa (Great Meadows, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was the bow.
Sophomore Chris Moylan (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity eight. Storck sat stroke, Howlett was in the seven seat, Harrison sat in the six seat, Annab was in the five seat, McCarthy sat in the four seat, Billings was in the three seat, Cairo sat in the two seat, and DiMarino was the bow.
The Shoremen return to action May 11th and 12th at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
