Shorewomen Flood Gophers, 14-9

Ziccardi Scores Three Goals, Assists on Another in Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College scored seven of the 10 second-half goals to pull away from visiting Goucher College in a 14-9 non-conference women's lacrosse game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 5-3 with the win, while the Gophers fell to 4-6 with the loss.

Washington scored the first two goals of the game on tallies by freshman midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) 1:14 and 1:42 into the game, respectively. Goucher answered with goals by Mary Lambert and Colleen Cole to knot the score at 2-2 with 21:50 remaining in the first half. Sophomore attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) gave the Shorewomen a 3-2 lead with a goal with 20:03 left, but Cole answered with 19:05 to play. Freshman attacker Corinne Ziccardi (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) gave the Shorewomen a 4-3 lead with 15:31 to go in the half, but goals by Cole and Hannah Khin gave Goucher a 5-4 advantage with 13:23 to go before the break. Junior midfielder Liz Cumberpatch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) evened the score for the Shorewomen with a goal with 13:03 to play, but the Gophers pulled ahead one more time when Cole scored with 7:23 to go in the first. Washington tied things up at 6-6 with a goal by senior midfielder Allie Hanzsche (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) with 6:37 on the clock and took the lead for good when Parrish scored with 2:57 to go before the intermission.

Restaino gave the Shorewomen and 8-6 lead with a goal with 27:33 to play in the second, but Goucher trimmed the lead back to one goal on a Lambert goal with 24:27 remaining. The Shorewomen then scored five of the next six goals to take control of the game. Junior midfielder Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) scored with 21:04 to play and reshman midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) netted a goal with 20:52 to go before Cole scored for Goucher with 15:34 left. A goal by Ziccardi and another by Ohrem with 14:32 and 14:13 left, respectively, gave the Shorewomen a 13-8 cushion. Khin netted Goucher's final goal with 2:47 remaining and freshman attacker Britton Preroff (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) scored for the Shorewomen with 35 seconds on the clock to provide the final margin.

Ziccardi paced the Shorewomen with three goals and assist, while Restaino scored three goals of her own. Ohrem had a goal and two assists, Parrish had two goals and one assist, and junior attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) handed out three assists. Hanzsche and Shipley each recorded one goal and one assist.

Cole scored a game-high five goals for the Gophers. Lambert and Khin each added two goals, while Becca Smith had three assists.

Washington wore down Goucher in the second half. The Shorewomen had a 13-10 edge in shots in the first half; in the second half the margin grew to 19-6. Draw controls were dead even in the first half at seven a piece, but the Shorewomen controlled 10 of the 11 draws in the second half.

The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Haverford.
