Shorewomen Take Down Top MARC Rival #9 Marietta in Varsity Eight
MERCER, N.J. -- The eighth-ranked Washington College women's rowing team won the Division III varsity eight over its chief competitor for the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference championship, ninth-ranked Marietta, and finished second to Marietta in the Division III second varsity eight at the Knecht Cup, held yesterday and today in Mercer, N.J.
In the Division III varsity eight, the Shorewomen's varsity eight won its heat by a wide margin in 7:08.95. Susquehanna was second in 7:45.50, Bryn Mawr third in 7:48.49, and North Park fourth in 8:20.53. The Shorewomen's second varsity eight - which raced as a "B" boat in the event - was second in its heat to also advance to the final, finishing in 7:21.18. Marietta was first in that heat in 7:04.88, Mary Washington third in 7:35.36, and Vassar fourth in 7:55.48. In the final, the varsity eight out-raced Marietta by nearly nine seconds, finishing first in 7:00.95 to Marietta's second-place time of 7:10.75. The Shorewomen's second varsity eight beat out three first varsity eights in the final, placing third in 7:40.66. Mary Washington was fourth in 7:49.73, Bryn Mawr fifth in 7:50.31, and Susquehanna sixth in 7:58.31.
In the one-race Division III second varsity eight event, the Shorewomen finished second in 7:22.94, less than 1.5 seconds behind Marietta, which won in 7:21.47. Mary Washington "A" was third in 8:17.40 and Mary Washington "B" was fourth in 8:58.44.
In the Division III varsity four, the Shorewomen placed third in their heat in 8:35.00. The College of New Jersey won the heat in 8:05.16, Vassar was second in 8:22.43, and Richard Stockton was fourth in 9:00.92.
Junior Christie Phebus (Trappe, Md./Easton) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's first varsity eight. Junior Kelly Bird (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) sat stroke, freshman Hannah Sive (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) was in the seven seat, junior Mickey Fili (Sparks, Md./Hereford) sat in the six seat, junior Taira Sullivan (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) was in the five seat, freshman Madeleine Morrissette (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) sat in the four seat, senior Ellie Hilton (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was in the three seat, senior Val DiLisi (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) was in the two seat, and junior Ashley Myles (Chester Spring, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was the bow.
Junior Samantha Mason (Preston, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight when it competed as the "B" boat in the Division III varsity eight, while senior Abby Thomas (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) was its coxswain in the Division III second varsity eight. Sophomore Maggie Perry (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) sat stroke, junior Krystal Brostek (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) was in the seven seat, and freshman Diana Lucey (Bristol, R.I./St. Mary Academy-Bay View) sat in the six seat, senior Emily Sahadeo (College Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) was in the five seat. Freshman Danielle Huston Hakey (Waldorf, Md./Calverton School) was in the four seat for the "B" entry in the Division III varsity eight, while freshman Erin Coffman (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) sat in the four seat for the Division III second varsity eight. Freshman Jackie Creitz (Schencksville, Pa./Parkland) was in the three seat, freshman Annie Sniffen (Havertown, Pa./Lower Merion) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Jennie Knapp (Vineland, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) was the bow.
Sophomore Jaclyn Gibbons (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity four. Huston Hakey sat stroke, freshman Megan Prokopius (Chesapeake, Va./Bishop Sullivan) was in the three seat, sophomore Michaela Martino (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) was in the two seat, and freshman Hannah Cagle (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) was the bow.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday at the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia.
