CHESTERTOWN, Md. — After three consecutive Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships and three consecutive appearances at the NCAA Division III Championships, the Washington College women's rowing team will have a number of faces in new places this spring as the Shorewomen return just three members of last year's first varsity eight.
Juniors Maddie Morrissette (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and Jackie Creitz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore Jules Shipps (Wye Mills, Md./Gunston School) return from the varsity eight that won the petite final at the NCAA Division III Championships. A 2014 All-MARC Novice selection, Morrissette was the 2015 NCAA Elite 89 Award Winner for Division III Rowing as the championship participant with the highest grade-point average. Creitz moved up from the second varsity eight at the MARC Championships to the first varsity eight for NCAA's. Shipps, a 2015 All-MARC Novice choice, was the only Shorewoman freshman to row in either of the team's top two boats last spring.
Four other returning rowers saw time in the team's top eight during its fall 2015 schedule. Senior Maggie Perry (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) and juniors Danielle Huston Hakey (Waldorf, Md./Calverton School) and Annie Sniffen (Havertown, Pa./Lower Merion) were in that top boat after finishing last spring in the second varsity eight, while sophomore Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had moved up from Washington's third varsity eight.
Other returning members of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight from last spring are senior coxswain Jaclyn Gibbons (Hingham, Mass./Hingham), seniors Jennie Knapp (Vineland, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy) and Michaela Martino (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and junior Megan Prokopius (Chesapeake, Va./Bishop Sullivan). Junior Hannah Cagle (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) and sophomores Annie Grosscup (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough), Kerri Walsh (Crestwood, N.Y./Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel), and Brenna Kacar (Dunkirk, Md./Bishop McNamara). Grosscup, Walsh, and Kacar competed in the second varsity eight this past fall.
Back with the Shorewomen after spending last year away from the team is junior Diana Lucey (Bristol, R.I./St. Mary Academy-Bay View). Lucey was in the Shorewomen's second varsity eight at the 2014 MARC Championships.
Freshman Julie Lado (South Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) rowed in the Shorewomen's second varsity eight this past fall. Seven newcomers on the Shorewomen's roster competed in their frosh/novice eight at the Occoquan Chase this past fall - junior Kainat Khan (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and freshmen Emily Booth (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney), Leslie Collins (Newark, Del./Ursuline Academy), Kelin McCloskey (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), Kaitlyn O'Donnell (Colonia, N.J./Unionville), Sara Underwood (Claymont, Del./Padua Academy), and Nicole Williams (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding). Freshmen Amelai Berbach (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), Lizzie Bienert (Freeland, Md./Hereford), Adva Fuchs (Flushing, N.Y./World Journalism Prep School), and Karis Marano (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) round out the Shorewomen's list of newcomers.
Head coach Dr. Mike Davenport was named the MARC Women's Coach of the Year for the second time last season, which was his 25th as the team's head coach. Kari Hughes, a former member of the United States National Team, joined the coaching staff over the summer as the team's top assistant and recruiting coordinator. Long-time assistants Lauren McElhenny and Caren Saunders also return to the staff.
The Shorewomen are slated to open their spring 2016 regatta schedule March 26th at the Murphy Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J. They will host St. Mary's College of Maryland on April 1st and travel to Philadelphia for a regatta against La Salle and Philadelphia University the following day. April 9th and 10th will see the Shorewomen competing at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J. They will return to Philadelphia April 16th for the Kerr Cup. This year's MARC Championships will be held April 30th in Lewisberry, Pa.
