Shorewomen Leave Waynesburg and Rochester "Stung" at Frostburg Tournament

Lee Tallies Double-Double in Both Matches

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team swept a pair of matches at Bobcat Arena in the first day of the 2014 Frostburg State Tournament.  The Shorewomen topped the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 3-0, (25-11, 25-19, 25-21) in the first match of the day and downed the Rochester Yellowjackets, 3-0, (25-18, 25-18, 25-20) in the second match of the day.  Washington is now 6-1 on the year.

Versus Waynesburg (3-6), Washington led 7-6 in the first set before going on an 11-2 run to take an 18-8 lead on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Cooney (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life School).  The Shorewomen closed out the set on a kill by senior middle hitter Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach)

In the second set, the Shorewomen and Yellow Jackets were tied 13-13 before WC went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-14 lead on a Cooney kill.  Washington would close out the second on a kill by sophomore right-side Alexis Jordan (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge).

Waynesburg led 13-12 in the third set before Washington College went on an 11-2 run to take a 23-15 lead following an attack error by the Yellow Jackets.  The Shorewomen won the set and match courtesy of a service error by Waynesburg.

Junior outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hill) tallied her third double-double of 2014 with 16 kills and 15 digs with her 16 finishers leading  all players.  Freshman setter Taylor Horan (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) also notched a double-double, her third of the campaign, with a match-best 37 assists and 10 digs.  Sophomore defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista) had a squad-high 17 digs.  Sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had 15 digs and freshman setter/defensive specialist Emma Craig (Westminster, Md./Notre Dame Prep) recorded 11 digs to give Washington five players with double figures in digs.  The Shorewomen hit .220 in the match.

Morgan Newbauer had 13 assists and 10 digs to record a double-double for Waynesburg as her 13 helpers led the club.  Jessica Dorazio had a match-best 18 digs and Meghan Balogh had 10 digs for the Yellow Jackets.

Against Rochester (4-6), the Shorewomen raced out to a 15-4 lead in the opening set on a Cooney kill before the Yellowjackets went on a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 19-17 on an attack error by Washington.  The Shorewomen would respond however with a 6-1 set closing run to win by seven points, clinching it on an attack miscue by Rochester.

In the second set, the teams were tied 18-18 when Washington scored the final seven points to win the set and match.  Cooney broke the tie with a kill and won four of the seven points in the run on kills.  The set was capped by a Beresik finisher.

The Shorewomen took control of the third set with five unanswered points to take an 18-13 lead on a block by Cooney and freshman middle hitter Alaina Geissberger (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North).  Rochester got it to within 23-20 on a Xiaoyi Li kill, but the Shorewomen won the final two points of the set and match, clinching the win on an ace by Craig.

Lee had her second double-double of the year with 13 kills, which was tops in the match, and 13 digs.  She also served up four aces to lead all players.  Cooney pounded out 12 kills and Utchen recorded a contest-best 16 digs.  Horan handed out 33 assists to lead all players.  Washington hit .234 in the win.

For Rochester, Meghan Connor had 14 digs to lead the team, while Jennie Ford and Ashley Hunter had 10 digs each.  Li passed out 27 assists for the Yellowjackets. 

The Shorewomen will play Cairn at noon and Eastern Mennonite at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in the second and final day of the tournament.
