Shorewomen Split Tri-Match at Gettysburg

Shorewomen Come Up Short Against Bullets, Bounce Back with Win Over Cougars

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington College volleyball team split a pair of matches at Gettysburg College this afternoon. The Shorewomen (11-4, 0-2 Centennial) opened the day with a 25-15, 25-15, 27-25, Centennial Conference loss to the host Bullets, but bounced back with a 25-12, 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 15-12 non-conference victory over Kean University.

Against the Bullets (12-5, 2-0 Centennial), Washington held a 10-8 lead in the first set before Gettysburg ran off nine straight points to surge ahead, 17-10. In the second set, the Bullets used a 12-3 run to build a 16-9 lead en route to another 25-15 set win. The third set was tied 8-8 before Gettysburg scored six straight points to take a 14-8 lead. The Bullets held a 20-12 lead in the final set before eight straight points by the Shorewomen tied the score at 20-20. The score was tied again at 21-21, 24-24, and 25-25, but the Shorewomen never took the lead and the Bullets finished the match with a 27-25 third-set win.  

Laura Begin pounded down a match-high 14 kills and scooped up nine digs in the win for Gettysburg. Cara Stine added a match-best six blocks, while Stephanie Blair tallied 27 assists and a match-best 21 digs. Hannah Bentz contributed 16 digs for the Bullets. Junior outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hil) paced Washington with seven kills and 18 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista) added 16 digs, while freshman setter Taylor Horan (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) had 27 assists. 

Against Kean (6-9), the Shorewomen ended the first set on a 15-3 run to post a 25-12 win. Washington never trailed in the second set and pulled away late for the 25-19 win. Kean caught fire in the third set, hitting .386 with 18 kills against just one error in 44 attempts en route to a 25-20 set win. In the fourth set, Kean fought back from a 23-16 deficit to pull out a 26-24 win and force a decisive fifth set. Washington won the fifth set and the match on a Kean attack error by Elizabeth DeGroot.

Junior middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) pounded down 16 kills for the Shorewomen against Kean, while sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Cooney (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life School) added 14 kills. Freshman middle hitter Alaina Geissberger (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) added 10 kills against just one error in 19 attempts, while Horan handed out 48 assists and added 17 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) chipped in a team-high 19 digs. 

Kassie Hernandez led all plays with 19 kills for Kean and added 15 digs. Jen Espinal added 10 kills and 17 digs, while Sara Ridgway had 10 kills of her own. Alana Aranjo handed out 36 assists and recorded 16 digs, while DeGroot had a match-best 24 digs.

The five-set win over Kean ran the Shorewomen's win streak in five-set matches to seven.

The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Swarthmore.
