Shorewomen Win a Pair of Matches in First Day of DeSales Invitational

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Junior defensive specialist Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) served up a career-best eight service aces against Baruch in the second match of the day and 12 total in two matches to help Washington College go 2-0 in the first day of the DeSales Invitational at Billera Gym in a pair of non-conference volleyball matches.  The Shorewomen swept Gwynedd Mercy in three sets (25-14, 25-10, 25-9) and took all three sets from Baruch (25-10, 25-19, 25-20).

How It Happened
- With the opening set tied 3-3, the Shorewomen rolled off six unanswered points to take control of the set at 9-3 en route to the 11-point win.  Kristin Lee had three straight kills during the run.  A Jess Daunoras service ace ended the set.
- Leading the Griffins 9-6 in the second set, Washington won 16 of the final 20 points to win by 15.  The Shorewomen hit .469 in the second set with 15 kills and no errors in 32 attempts.  Kaitlyn Marino ended the set with a kill.
- In third and final set, WC jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Gwynedd Mercy and never looked back.  Rachel Baker capped the set and match with an ace.

For The Shorewomen (2-0)
- Lee had 11 kills and hit .400 in the match.  While she was the lone Shorewomen in the match to have double figures in kills, four other Shorewomen had five or more finishers.
- Taylor Horan had a double-double with 28 assists, leading all players, and 10 digs.
- Audrey Utchen had 11 digs to lead Washington.
- The Shorewomen hit .347 in the match on 45 kills and 12 errors in 95 attack attempts while serving up 14 aces, led by Baker's four.

For Gwynedd Mercy (0-2)
- Got a match-best 12 digs from Rachael Hall, while Lauren Tressel had 11 digs.
- Lauren Martin dished out 10 assists to lead the Griffins.

Washington College 3 Baruch 0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-20)

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen capped the first set with 10 straight points to win by 15.  Sophomore Emma Craig served the last nine points of the set.  An attack error by the Bearcats ended the first set.
- Washington led Baruch 16-15 in the second set before rolling off nine of the last 13 points to take the middle set.  An unassisted kill by Daunoras closed out the set.
- In third and final set, the two teams were tied at 20-20 when the Shorewomen won the last five points to take the set and match.  Lee closed out the contest with a kill from Horan.

For The Shorewomen (3-0)
- Horan had 26 assists to lead all players, while adding seven digs.
- A very balanced attack with five players tallying five or more kills.
- Baker and Utchen had 10 digs to lead Washington.
- Washington had 13 service aces, led by Baker's eight.

For Baruch (1-3)
- Got a match-high 15 digs from Amy Sung.
- Crystle Dela Cruz handed out 20 assists to lead the Bearcats.

- Horan chalked up her 10th career double-double in the win over Gwynedd Mercy.
- The Shorewomen lead the all-time series against Gwynedd Mercy 2-1.  The Griffins won in four sets at Dickinson in 2006, while the Shorewomen swept at Wesley in 2010.
- This was the second all-time meeting for WC against Baruch.  The Shorewomen won in four sets in 2008 in New York City and now have won both matches.
