Shorewomen Rally To Top Penn State-Behrend After Falling to Baldwin Wallace

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Washington College volleyball team split a pair of match at Houts Gym in the first day of the 10th Annual Hampton Inn Crusader Classic at Susquehanna on Friday night.  The Shorewomen fell to Baldwin Wallace in the first match of the evening, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21), and rallied from two sets down to top Penn State-Behrend in five sets (20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-11).  Washington is now 7-4 on the year after splitting the two non-conference matches.

Baldwin Wallace 3 Washington College 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21)

How It Happened
-Washington used a 7-0 run to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 19-15 lead on a kill by Kristin Lee.  However the Yellow Jackets closed out the set on a 10-3 run to take the opening set by three points.  Nikolette Scruggs clinched the set on a service ace.  Baldwin Wallace won the final four points of the set.
-The Yellow Jackets closed out the second set on a 12-5 run to turn a 13-12 lead into a 25-17 win.  Morgan Thomas ended the set on a kill and she had the final three points of the set, all on finishers.
-Anna Miley tallied a kill for the Yellow Jackets in the third set to break an 11-11 tie and Baldwin Wallace would not trail again.  The set and match ended on an attack error by the Shorewomen.

For the Shorewomen (6-4)
-Senior Jess Daunoras had a team-high 11 kills, while netting four blocks which tied for match-high and serving up two aces to lead all players.  Her 11 kills tied for match-high.
-Sophomore Alaina Geissberger tied Daunoras for tops in blocks with four.
-Sophomore Taylor Horan dished out 29 assists, while junior Audrey Utchen had a contest-best 18 digs.
-Hit .125 as a team.

For Baldwin Wallace (11-1)
-Got 11 kills and 14 digs from Alicia Lortcher.  Her 11 kills tied for match-best with Daunoras and fellow Yellow Jacket Morgan Thomas and her 14 digs led Baldwin Wallace.  She also had four blocks to tie for tops in the match and lead Baldwin Wallace.
-Thomas had 11 kills and hit .346 in the win.
-Ashley Nuding had 34 assists to lead all players and just missed joining Lortcher in tallying a double-double with nine digs.
-Brittany Miner had 13 digs.
-Yellow Jackets hit .230 in the win.

Washington College 3 Penn State-Behrend 2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-11)

How It Happened
-Washington led 18-17 in the first set to cap a 7-0 run on a setting error by the Lions.  However Penn State-Behrend roared back with an 8-2 run to close the first set and win by five.  A Maddie Auld kill clinched the first set win for the Lions.
-Tied 13-13 in the second set, Penn State-Behrend won 12 of the final 20 points to take a 2-0 lead.  An attack error by the Shorewomen ended the second set.
-Washington began its comeback with a five-point win in the third set.  The Shorewomen led 9-1 after a kill from Lee before the Lions went on a 15-8 run to trim the deficit to 17-16 on a Kylie McSwaney kill.  However WC ended the set strong with an 8-4 run and won the set on Kaitlyn Marino kill.
-The Shorewomen took the lead for good in the fourth set at 5-4 on a Daunoras kill.  A kill by Geissberger capped the fourth set and sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
-In the fifth set, the Lions led 11-9 on a Rachel Frye kill before WC went on a 6-0 run to end the set and match.  An attack error by Penn State-Behrend put Washington ahead for good at 12-11 and a kill by Horan ended the match.

For the Shorewomen (7-4)
-Three Shorewomen had three players record double-doubles: Lee (match-high 18 kills and team-best 16 digs), Horan (team-best 35 assists and 15 digs) and sophomore Sarah Bentley (17 assists and a personal-high 12 digs).
-Marino had 15 kills to set a career-best for the freshman and Daunoras added 14 finishers for Washington.  Daunoras also had seven blocks to tie her career-best.
-Geissberger had career-bests of seven blocks and five assisted blocks. 
-Utchen had 26 digs, while junior Rachel Baker tallied 12 digs.
-Team hit .154 in the win.

For Penn State-Behrend (5-7)
-Frye had 12 kills and 11 digs to chalk up a double-double.  Her 12 kills led the Lions.
-Courtney Hopson had 18 digs to lead all players, while Auld chipped in with 15.
-Hannah Saunders just missed a double-double with nine digs to go with a match-high 38 assists.
-Team hit .116 in the five-set setback.

-Shorewomen and Yellow Jackets met for the first time on the volleyball court.  Baldwin Wallace is in the suburban Cleveland town of Berea.
-It was third all-time meeting between the Shorewomen and Lions (Erie, Pennsylvania) and the Shorewomen lead the all-time series 2-1.  WC won in 1994 (2-1), while Penn State-Behrend won 3-0 in 1996.  The two teams were supposed to meet in 2012 at the Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, but did not due to a last minute scheduling change.
-Daunoras is at 296 career blocks and is just four away from becoming the second WC player to tally 300 all-time rejections.  Marcie McConville '06 had 323 career blocks.
