Shorewomen Sweep Cardinals In Three Sets

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team has won its first eight matches for the first time in 39 years as the host Shorewomen swept visiting Catholic, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-21), on Wednesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in a non-conference volleyball match.  The eight wins to start the season are the most victories to open a campaign for a WC volleyball squad before the first loss.  The Shorewomen began the 1978 season at 8-0.  The Cardinals drop to 7-3 with the loss.

Washington College 3 Catholic 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-21)

How It Happened
-In the first set, Washington broke open a 5-5 tie with eight straight points to take a 13-5 lead on a Catholic attack error.  A service error by the Cardinals ended the opening set.  The Shorewomen served six of their 10 aces in the first.
-Washington jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the second set on a kill by Cassie KowalskiLizzie Baden ended the second with a finisher from Taylor Horan
-The Shorewomen led 11-8 in the third set before the Cardinals went on an 11-4 run to take a 19-15 lead on a kill by Lauren Unsworth.  However, Washington would end the set and match on a 10-2 run to win by four points.  An attack error by Catholic put WC ahead for good at 22-21 and ignited a run of four straight points by the hosts to end the contest.  Alaina Geissberger tallied a kill from Horan for the match's final point. 

For The Shorewomen (8-0)
- Horan (match-highs of 31 assists and 12 digs and tied for match-high with three aces), Kowalski (contest-best 12 kills), Kylie Peets (eight kills and .583 attack percentage) Geissberger (match-topping six blocks), Kaitlyn Marino (three aces to tie for contest-high)
-Washington had eight blocks on the night.
-Washington hit .172 in the win.

For Catholic (7-3)
-Amy O'Connor (five kills), Christina Ciola (11 digs and two aces to lead team in both categories), Maria Gonzalez (11 assists), Isabelle Cooper (three blocks).
-Cardinals hit .000 in the match and had four blocks.

-Kowalski was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman of the Match during the broadcast.
-Washington has four of the last five against Catholic and the last four against the Cardinals in Chestertown.
