Washington Wins Sixth Straight Against Ursinus
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team swept visiting Ursinus, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-21), on Wednesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in a Centennial Conference volleyball match. The Shorewomen have now downed the Bears six straight times in the series and improve to 17-10 overall and 3-6 in the Centennial. The Bears drop to 6-17 and 0-8 respectively with the loss. It was the home finale for the Shorewomen.
Washington College 3 Ursinus 0 (25-7, 25-19, 25-20)
How It Happened
-In the first set, Washington won the first five points and raced out to a 14-2 lead on a kill by Alaina Geissberger and never looked back on its way to an 18-point win. An attack error by the Bears ended the opening set.
-The Shorewomen used an 8-2 run to turn a 7-7 tie into a 15-9 lead on a kill by Abby Smith. Lizzie Baden ended the second with a finisher from Taylor Horan.
-Ursinus jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set following a service ace by Taylor McCartney before Washington answered with a 13-4 run to take a 17-12 lead on an attack miscue by the Bears. After Ursinus won the next three points to cut the lead to 17-15 after a block by Miranda Foster and Kelly Piotrowicz, the Shorewomen ended the night winning eight of the final 13 points to win by five. Isabella Sansanelli notched a kill from Horan to end the set and contest.
For The Shorewomen (17-10, 3-6 CC)
- Horan (match-best 25 assists and nine digs to tie for match-best), Kylie Peets (match-best five blocks), Kaitlyn Marino (10 kills to lead all players), Sarah Bentley (five aces to lead all players)
-Washington had seven blocks on the night.
-Washington hit .216 in the win and served up 13 aces.
For Ursinus (6-17, 0-8 CC)
-Foster (six kills), Lauren Novtony (nine digs to tie for match-best and two aces to tie for team-best), Piotrowicz (17 assists), McCartney (two aces)
-Bears hit .-022 in the match and had four blocks.
-Ursinus served a total of four aces.
Notes
-Marino was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman of the Match during the broadcast.
-Washington has won six in a row against Ursinus and it's the current longest streak against any Centennial foe.
-Horan totaled her 100th career block in the win and now has 3,269 career assists. She needs 34 helpers to tie Caitlin Ward '10 for the all-time assists lead by a WC player and 35 to break. Ward totaled 3,303 in her career.
-It was the "Purple Out Game" in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month that was co-hosted by the women's volleyball team and the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.
